Ronaldo's Real Madrid medical held up till next week as contract wrangle delays £80m transfer from
Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to undergo his Real Madrid medical next week if he can overcome a contract dispute with his prospective new employers.
The Portugal star is on holiday in America while his agent Jorge Mendes has spent much of the week locked in talks at the Bernabeu over how the player's image rights will be split.
Madrid were ready to send a doctor to Los Angeles immediately after their £80million bid was accepted by Manchester United last week, but the contract wrangle has delayed the 24-year-old's medical.
Both sides still expect to complete the deal before the end of the month, with a joint unveiling of Ronaldo and £56m signing Kaka tentatively planned at the Bernabeu on June 29 or 30.
Shamrock Rovers expect to play a friendly against the Spanish giants during Madrid's training camp in Ireland between July 13 and 22, but Ronaldo is unlikely to play.
The former Sporting Lisbon winger is managing a hernia problem carefully in an attempt to avoid surgery.
He is set to make his bow with Kaka at the Bernabeu on July 26, when Los Merengues face South American champions LDU Quito in the Peace Cup. Aston Villa are also in the tournament and could meet Madrid in the final on August 2.
Spain's prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has criticised the spending on Ronaldo.
The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party leader admitted he was probably not the best person to comment because of his allegiance to Barcelona, but he added: 'All these amounts seem to me to be excessive.
'In principle, I don't like it. I say it asI feel. Real Madrid say that they will make it pay off. The truth is that if football did not have so many people that followed games on television and that went to the stadiums, then surely we would not see these sums.'
Madrid are set to push their spending even further and are ready to offload nine or 10 players to help fund the spending spree.
But they have denied reports suggesting they have faxed English clubs a list of players that are available.
