Rams want Bannan stay

Derby manager Nigel Clough has hailed the versatility of on-loan midfielder Barry Bannan and has revealed he is hoping to extend the Aston Villa teenager's stay. The 19-year-old is at Pride Park on a one-month deal but the Rams are planning to contact Premier League Villa before the agreement ends on Easter Monday. Clough has been highly impressed by Bannan and is eager to retain the Scotland Under 21 international as Derby bid to avoid Championship relegation. "Barry's shown enough, either coming on or starting, and he's given us something a bit different," Clough told the Derby Evening Telegraph. "He can fill a number of positions. If Kris Commons wasn't fit, he could go and play off the front man or go wide left or wide right or even in the centre of midfield. So he's a good little player to have around. "We will be getting in touch with Villa to see if we can extend the loan." Meanwhile, reports claim that Clough is to axe 12 members of his squad at the end of the season in a cost-cutting exercise.
