Derby County hope to sign a Premier League midfielder on a season-long loan, with Barry Bannan among the targets.
Bannan spent a spell on loan at Pride Park from Aston Villa last season and scored once in 10 appearances for the Rams.
He could be offered a return to the Championship club, although Derby boss Nigel Clough admits he is considering other options.
"We have enquired already about a couple of players, with a view to bringing someone in on loan to bolster the squad," Clough told the Derby Evening Telegraph.
"There are not too many talented midfielders out there at the moment who are available to buy.
"So we thought the quality a young player from a Premier League club could bring to the squad would be as good as, if not better, than anything we could bring in on a permanent basis.
"Barry is certainly one of the names because we know him and he has already been with us, but there are four or five possibilities."
