Porto dump Lyon out of Peace Cup

Lyon were runners-up in the first two editions of the event in 2003 and 2005 and were winners two years ago after defeating Bolton in the final. There is no chance for a repeat this year, though, as the French giants, having been held 1-1 by Besiktas in their opening match, were dumped out of the tournament after going down to Porto following a brace from Hulk. The Portuguese outfit can now ensure they finish top of Group D by avoiding defeat against Besiktas on Wednesday. Also waving goodbye to the Peace Cup on Monday night are Malaga after they were beaten 3-1 by Atlante, a result that gives Aston Villa renewed hope of making it through to the semi-finals. Malaga had started the pre-season tournament with a 1-0 win over Villa and would have guaranteed themselves a place in the last four with a victory over CONCACAF Champions League winners Atlante at La Rosaleda this evening. Playing at home did not prove an advantage for the Andalusian outfit, though, and they fell behind after 17 minutes when a clever through-ball by Giancarlo Maldonado set Gabriel Pereyra away and he took one touch before clipping the ball past Malaga goalkeeper Gustavo Munua. The home side, seeking to avoid following neighbours Sevilla out of the 12-team competition at the group stage, needed only seven minutes to get back on level terms when Jose Juan Luque slotted home from the edge of the box. Both teams had chances to take the lead but it was Atlante who managed to get their noses back in front in the 66th minute when Rafael Marquez netted, and Christian Bermudez sealed the win six minutes later with a superb volley from the edge of the area. The victory puts Atlante top of Group C and it will be a shoot-out between them and Villa on Wednesday to decide which team makes it into the semi-finals, with the Mexican team knowing a draw or even a narrow defeat will put them through.
