Petrov signs Villa deal

Stiliyan Petrov has handed Aston Villa a major boost by putting pen-to-paper on a new four-year deal. The Bulgarian midfielder has enjoyed his best season to date in a Villa shirt and has been rewarded with a new lucrative long-term contract. Petrov has experienced a memorable week after scooping the club's player of the year award at their annual dinner. Upon his £6.5million move to Villa Park in June 2006 Petrov initially struggled to justify Martin O'Neill's decision to bring him with him from Celtic. However he has since managed to prove his sceptics wrong in establishing himself as a major player within O'Neill's first XI. Petrov, who has made 35 league appearances this season, is now contracted to Villa until June 2013. "I am delighted. It is only just a year ago that people were concerning themselves about whether Stiliyan had a future here," said O'Neill. "But he has battled back so much so that I'd like him to be around here for the next few years. "If every person shows the same determination and willingness and drive that Stiliyan has shown the last year, there will be a future for anyone at the club."
