Petrov laments Villa's naivety

Skipper Stiliyan Petrov has blamed Aston Villa's horror show at Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday on their own naivety.[LNB] The midlanders turned in a desperately poor display on Tyneside as local hero Andy Carroll inspired the home side to a 6-0 victory with a hat-trick.[LNB]To make matters worse, striker John Carew missed a penalty with the score at 0-0 to let the promoted Magpies off the hook and pave the way for their goal rush.[LNB]The humiliating defeat came as a major shock after a 3-0 opening-day victory over West Ham and a midweek draw with Rapid Vienna, who head for Villa Park on Thursday evening.[LNB]Petrov told AVTV: "We will be a changed side in the next game. We have the quality, but we were probably a little bit naive.[LNB]"We thought we were going to come over here and get an easy game after our performance last week [against West Ham].[LNB]"But last week was last week and we need to be prepared for every single game.[LNB]"We are really disappointed because our defensive record has been great.[LNB]"We have been defending as a team really well and we have been really strong, but we missed that here.[LNB]"I said before, we have a belief. That is the main thing and we know we can do better, but we need to avoid this.[LNB]"If we want to achieve something, we need to avoid these games. We need to be better, we need to show more concentration and we need to see these games through."[LNB]Villa actually started the game the better, but Carew's miss seemed to lift Newcastle and once they got their noses in front, the visitors simply crumbled.[LNB]They were 3-0 down by the break as Joey Barton, Kevin Nolan and Carroll struck, and Kevin McDonald's side was beaten long before Carroll completed his treble either side of Nolan's second of the game.[LNB]Petrov said: "It is not a nice feeling. We wish the next game could come tomorrow so we could show everybody it was a one-off.[LNB]"Nobody likes to lose, especially with a result like that, so we will be raring to go back and start again.[LNB]"The season is ahead of us and we just need to perform and get better and better.[LNB]"We take all the responsibility. We play really brilliantly the one week, then come all the way up here and play really poorly.[LNB]"We need to get that balance and sometimes we just need to battle our way through.[LNB]"We started very well, but we missed a penalty and everything went against us.[LNB]"We weren't defending well enough, we didn't close people quickly enough, we were on the back foot and we gave them enough time.[LNB]"We conceded six goals, so it is up to us now to change all this, what we have done wrong.[LNB]"It is a long season - you cannot just put your head down now.[LNB]"We have just started now and it is going to be a long season. It is an odd game we will see where we are going to end up."
