Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill insists he would never spend money the club does not have.[LNB] Villa were close to breaking into the top four this season before their campaign tailed off.[LNB]Many feel Villa only need to bring in two or three new players to seriously threaten for a UEFA Champions League berth.[LNB]But O'Neill insists he will not over-spend in Villa's quest to progress.[LNB]"I'm all for spending what you can afford. If you can afford £500million because that's within your remit then good luck to you," he said.[LNB]"If you can't, then I'm sorry you don't. That's how I work.[LNB]"You don't mind taking the occasional risk. If you think it's for the benefit of the football club in the medium to long-term - someone like Ashley Young who has more than paid his way - that type of thing you don't mind doing once in a while.[LNB]"But if you are going to be reckless then I'm sorry, people have put trust in me and I am going to have to try to abide by that. You also accept the fact it's like catch 22: where do you go to compete with the big boys? Those things are important."[LNB]ScoutingMeanwhile, O'Neill admitted he was on the continent at the weekend after it emerged he was in Amsterdam to check in Ajax stopper Thomas Vermaelen.[LNB]He also confirmed that he was in Europe on Wednesday night, with league matches taking place in France and Germany.[LNB]"I can confirm that I was abroad watching football matches but I will confirm nothing else," he said.[LNB]'I will be abroad on Wednesday too."[LNB]
