O'Neill wants Heskey goals

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill wants Emile Heskey to improve his finishing and break into double figures this season. The 31-year-old only found the back of the net twice last term after his £3.5million move from Wigan in January, and O'Neill believes the England striker can be more predatory in the penalty area. Heskey has responded to his manager's plea by scoring twice in pre-season, and O'Neill will be hoping he can continue his good run of form into Villa's first Premier League game of the campaign against Wigan on Saturday. "I spoke to Emile during pre-season and told him there are 10 goals to be had by strikers in the top flight coming across into that little area at the near post, which is often unprotected," the Villa boss told The Mirror. "If you can make your run and go in there with desire and determination, goals are there for you. "That's two goals he's scored now in quick succession by doing that during this pre-season." During his time with Liverpool, Heskey bagged 60 goals in 222 appearances, and O'Neill will want a return to his Anfield form where the big forward's best return was 23 goals in one season. He said: "Emile is a centre-forward thriving on goals. Strikers don't usually want to tell you their targets for the season, but I am sure he will have some. "Generally, I think we are more than capable of scoring goals this season because we have some really good forward players."
