Norway plight surprises Carew

John Carew is fully aware that Norway need to beat Scotland on Wednesday to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Holland have already clinched top spot in qualifying Group Nine, leaving the other four sides to battle it out for second and a place in the play-offs. Norway are currently bottom of the table, four points adrift of Scotland and Macedonia and one behind Iceland, having not won any of their opening five games. A draw with Scotland may just keep them in contention but defeat would see them eliminated and Carew believes it is vital to claim all three points. Aston Villa striker Carew admits he is puzzled by Norway's poor form but has vowed to keep fighting for the remaining three games. "Our position is a bit surprising," said the 29-year-old. "I didn't expect us to be in this position, but that is the reality. "We haven't been good enough and we have been a bit unlucky as well. "But we still have a theoretical chance to qualify. We have to try and get the result - although it is always tough against Scotland. "Even though we might not qualify, we need to win the last three games to get the confidence back for the next qualification campaign."
