Newcastle captain Michael Owen has a chance of being involved in his club's relegation battle at Aston Villa on Sunday. Owen and his manager Alan Shearer have been heartened by the scan on his latest groin injury which has shown up just a mild strain. The former England striker will be gently guided through this week but Shearer is hopeful his former strike partner will be able to start at Villa Park. Shearer said: 'He had a scan on Monday and there is no serious injury so we are hopeful he will be involved on Sunday.' Owen pulled out of the 1-0 defeat to Fulham on Saturday morning after failing a fitness test. He is understood to have suffered the injury during training on Friday. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker has gone 10 games without a goal, his worst run in his career, but Shearer is still certain he will score the goals to lift Newcastle out of the bottiom three. Although he dropped Owen for the defeat at Liverpool, Shearer has stood by his friend and, even though Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins missed chances against Fulham, Martins is expected to return to the bench this weekend.
