Man City v Aston Villa preview

04 March 2009 10:30
Aston Villa will be aiming to prove they can cope under pressure when they head to Manchester City in the Premier League on Wednesday night. Third-placed Villa's advantage over Arsenal was cut to three points on Tuesday, as the Gunners defeated West Brom. Furthermore, Martin O'Neill's side have gone five matches without victory, with their latest setback coming last weekend when they let slip a two-goal lead to draw with Stoke City. However, the Midlands club boast an impressive record on the road, and success at Eastlands would see them secure an eighth successive league away win. City, meanwhile, have failed to taste victory in their last three top-flight matches, but will be hopeful they could return to winning ways on their home turf. Manager Mark Hughes, though, faces a selection headache up front, as he contemplates a starting XI without strikers Craig Bellamy and Robinho. Wales attacker Bellamy is expected to be out for at least a fortnight with a knee injury sustained in the 1-0 loss at West Ham. Robinho is also sidelined after picking up a knee injury at Upton Park, while Micah Richards is a major doubt with a hamstring problem. Hughes could turn to injury-prone striker Valeri Bojinov to spearhead City's attack, with the Bulgarian available following two long-term lay-offs. For Villa, striker Emile Heskey is battling to be fit for the encounter at the City of Manchester Stadium. The England player was substituted during the second half of the 2-2 home draw with Stoke at the weekend and had an ice pack placed on his troublesome Achilles immediately after leaving the pitch. John Carew could be set to start his first league game since returning from a back problem last month after scoring his 10th goal of the campaign against Tony Pulis' side. Defender Wilfred Bouma has made a reserve-team comeback after eight months out with a dislocated ankle but he will not be considered against City. Possible starting XIs Man City: Given, Zabaleta, Dunne, Onuoha, Bridge, Elano, Kompany, Ireland, De Jong, Caicedo, Bojinov. Aston Villa: Friedel, Cuellar, Davies, Knight, Young, Milner, Petrov, Barry, Young, Carew, Agbonlahor.
