Liverpool v Aston Villa preview

24 August 2009 10:13
Liverpool play host to Aston Villa on Monday night aiming for their second win of the season. The Reds bounced back from their opening defeat to Tottenham with a 4-0 success over Stoke and they will be keen to secure some more home comforts against Villa. Villa have endured a difficult start to the campaign losing their opening Premier League game to Wigan and then going down 1-0 to Rapid Vienna in the Europa League qualifiers. Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez still has problems to contend with in defence with Daniel Agger facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after undergoing back surgery. Martin Skrtel is doubtful with a jaw problem which forced him to miss the Stoke clash meaning young Spaniard Daniel Ayala could continue in defence alongside Jamie Carragher. New signing Sotirios Kyrgiakos is unlikely to feature as he is struggling for match fitness. Alberto Aquilani (ankle), Fabio Aurelio and Nabil El Zhar (both knee) remain unavailable for Benitez. Aston Villa are seating over the fitness of Curtis Davies after he injured his shoulder in the defeat by Rapid Vienna. If Davies misses out young defender Shane Lowry is expected to make his first start in the Premier League. Full-back Luke Young misses out again as he has been given compassionate leave after the death of his half-brother. John Carew could hand Villa a boost by playing his first game of the season after missing their first two matches through injury and illness. Left-sided duo Stewart Downing and Wilfred Bouma remain on the sidelines for Martin O'Neill. Possible starting XIs Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Ayala, Insua, Lucas, Mascherano, Kuyt, Gerrard, Benayoun, Torres. Aston Villa: Friedel, Beye, Lowry, Cuellar, Shorey, Milner, Delph, Sidwell, Ashley Young, Carew, Agbonlahor.
