19 August 2010 20:19
Follow the action as Aston Villa visit Rapid Vienna in a bid to avenge last season's defeat at the same stage, Liverpool host Trabzonspor and Manchester City travel to FC Timisoara. Celtic, Dundee United, Motherwell and TNS are also in action so let me know all your thought on tonight's matches at dan.ripley@dailymail.co.uk[LNB] Europa League live scoresRapid Vienna 1-1 Aston Villa FT[LNB]Odense 2-1 Motherwell FT[LNB]CSKA Sofia 2-0 TNS (7.30pm)[LNB]Liverpool 1-0 Trabzonspor (7.45pm)[LNB]Celtic 2-0 FC Utrecht (7.45pm)[LNB]Dundee United 0-1 AEK (8pm)[LNB]Timisoara 0-0 Manchester City (8pm)[LNB]21.10: GOAL! CSKA Sofia 2-0 TNS[LNB]21.09: GOAL! CSKA Sofia 1-0 TNS[LNB]Heratbreak for TNS with just ten minutes to go Giuseppe Aquaro gives the Bulgarians the lead.[LNB]21.06: New boy (well sort of) Fabio Aurelio nearly scores a Roanldinhoesque fluke, as his free-kick from about 30 yards deceives everyone, including the goalkeeper by dipping over the keeper and off the outside of the post.[LNB]One of those where in post match interviews he would of 'meant it'.[LNB]21.05: Manchester City are back under way at Timisoara.[LNB]21.04 If ever there was proof that 1-0 is a dangerous lead then this is it. Beating the offside trap Bulat fires at goal in the Turkish sides' fiirst attack of the half but Reina gets just enough on it to deflect the ball agonisingly over the bar, big let off for Liverpool.[LNB]21.00: For goodness sake, Liverpool should be out of sight by now, Jovanovic this time is left one on one with Kivrak following a clever lay off by Torres but the keeper does well to come out and fumble him, Kivrak is stopping Trabzonspor from completely capitulating here.[LNB]20.59: It is all Liverpool now, so much so that Bulrak has come off for Alanzinho in a straight swap tactically.[LNB]20.55: Saved! Lucas is brought down by Serkan Balci who is booked for his troubles. Joe Cole grabbed the ball placed it in front of the Kop but Kivrak guessed correct in diving to his left to parry the ball away and ruin the script, replays show he is miles off his line when the penalty is taken though.[LNB]20.55: PENALTY for Liverpool![LNB]20.50: Half-time: Timisoara 0-0 Manchester City[LNB]Roberto Mancini needs to rally his troops in that one.[LNB]20.49: What a start that is! fernando Torres forces Kivrak in to palming a stinging shot out for a corner.[LNB]From that corner Lucas powers a free header wide, and he really should score, there was nobody around him at all. Shocking marking, shocking finish.[LNB]20.48: Fernando Torres enters the fray at half-time with goal scorer Ryan Babel making way for him, much to the audible delight of the home crowd.[LNB]20.47: The half-time team talk will certainly be easier for Roy Hodgson at least, a trip to Turkey is never ever easy though so I would be surprised if Liverpool do not continue to try and get another one or two goals in the second half.[LNB]Just in time: Babel scores in first half stoppage time[LNB] [LNB]20.42: Still no goals at Timisoara either as Manchester City so far can not make the breakthrough as we approach half-time.[LNB]20.36: I haven't forgot about TNS, there has just been no goal sin their match against CSKA Sofia, what a result that would be! Is it too much to ask for an away goal in that one?[LNB]20.31: Half-time Liverpool 1-0 Trabzonspor[LNB]Half-time: Celtic 2-0 FC Utrecht[LNB]20.31: GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Trabzonspor[LNB]Forty-five minutes had just ticked over on the clock and a Joe Cole through ball put in Ryan Babel who after running in to the box cool as you like places it in the keepers far corner.[LNB]It's arguably their first real chance but to the Dutchman's credit he took full advantage of it, very neat and tidy finish.[LNB] Goal bound: Samaras fires Celtic in to a two goal lead[LNB]20.27: GOAL! Celtic 2-0 FC Utrecht[LNB]Celtic are having no problems as the much maligned Georgios Samaras doubles the home side's lead after half an hour. Celtic are leading the way for British sides tonight.[LNB]20.26: The captain Umut Bulat takes it, but he sends it flying over and in doing so probably sums up this half, all promise early on but has fallen away drastically.[LNB]Three minutes until half-time.[LNB]20.25: Dangerous free-kick here for Trabzonspor after they win a soft free-kick just 20 yards out courtesy of a Jamie Carragher foul. Three men stand over the ball.[LNB]20.17: Ten minutes to go until half-time and the only good news to report for Liverpool is they at least have not conceded an away goal.[LNB]New signing Christian Poulsen has been disappointing so far, his passes have been wayward and in truth he has looked very rusty.[LNB]20.15: Still no real chances at Anfield with Liverpool holding most of the ball but being limited to distant free-kicks, the game has drifted off since that frantic start and the crowd have gone a little quiet as well as the game hits a lull.[LNB]20.13: GOAL! Dundee United 0-1 AEK[LNB]Just seven minutes gone at Tannadice but AEK have grabbed an away goal already as Rafik Djebbour  pounces in the box to put AEK ahead.[LNB] Euro joy: Juarez (right) gives Celtic the advantage[LNB]20.11: GOAL! Celtic 1-0 FC Utrecht[LNB]Efrain Juarez has scored from close range at Celtic Park to put the Scottish side in the driving seat.[LNB]20.09: A welcome tempo this Liverpool game is being played at, it's quick and both sides are being caught out in possession but it's giving this tie a great feel, though the Anfield crowd are also doing their bit, they do love their European nights whether its AC Milan or FC Pub Team playing at in front of the Kop.[LNB]20.07: Liverpool with the play but they are finding it hard to do anything with it as Trabzonspor playing quite high up and chasing down every ball, very committed in the opening stages from the Turkish side.[LNB] Bright start: Jovanovic (right) made a bright start for Liverpool[LNB]20.05: Dundee United and Manchester City have also kicked off with all British teams in action still 0-0.[LNB]20.00: Coming up to the 15 minute mark at Anfield and it's quite an even contest. Both sides showing some purpose going forward with the game quite open at the moment.[LNB]19.56: Full-time Odense 2-1 Motherwell[LNB]19.56: GOAL! Odense 2-1 Motherwell[LNB]Incredible! Moments after this tie looked like being a massive uphill task for Motherwell, Tom Hateley has fired in a free-kick in the fourth minute of injury time to secure a crucial away goal! Suddenely the return lef at Fir Park carries husge hope of progression for the Scottish side[LNB]19.54: Liverpool starting to stamp their authority on this one, Milan Jovanovic is causing the Turkish side all sorts o problems right now with his passing. [LNB]19.52: So close! Sotirios Kyrgiakos wins a header from a corner but it's well saved by Onur Kivrak in the TRabzonspor goal who springs to his left topalm it away.[LNB]19.51: More bad news for Motherwell as Steve Jennings has been sent off in the 87th minute.[LNB]19.51: Trabzonspor have started very brightly winning an early corner and doing all the pressing right now.[LNB]19.50: As are TNS who after 20 minutes are still drawing 0-0.[LNB]19.47: Liverpool and Celtic both underway[LNB]19.45: GOAL! Odense 2-0 Motherwell[LNB]Peter Utaka doubles Odense's lead firing in the top corner from inside the box.[LNB]19.38: Team news for Celtic, Liverpool, Dundee United and Manchester City:[LNB]Celtic v FC UtrechtCeltic: Zaluska, Cha, Majstorovic, Loovens, Ledley, Kayal, Brown, Juarez, Fortune, Samaras, Maloney. Subs: Given, Richards, Wright-Phillips, Adam Johnson, Vieira, Jo, Balotelli.Referee: Florian Meyer (Germany)[LNB]Full-time: Rapid Vienna 1-1 Aston Villa[LNB]Two out of two for Kevin MacDonald as Villa take an away goal back to Villa Park, and look hot favourites to make the Europa League group stage.[LNB]90+2min: Villa for the first time tonight are looking organised though and clear their lines.[LNB]90+1min: Last chance for Vienna as they win a soft free-kick from 35 yards out.[LNB]It's gone short and the eventual shot is deflected out for a corner.[LNB]89min: But not home yet as Rapid win a fortunate corner.[LNB]Villa though calm as you like clear the eventual close, three minutes injury time.[LNB]87min: Villa almost home, they are looking good for this draw, Weimann, in being stretchered behind the goal gets drenched by a Vienna fan chucking water at him. Welcome home him.[LNB]85min: Isaiah Osbourne takes a floor stricken Weimann's place then as Rapid also make a sub with Christopher Drazan on for Thomas Hinum[LNB]82min: Weimann has gone down in absolute agony on the right wing, bashing the floor in a very painful manner after an innocent looking challenge from Kavlak, his night looks to be over just moments after coming on.[LNB]79min: Signs of tiredness from Marc Albrighton and MacDonald bring shim off for Andreas Weimann, whos family incidentally are all rapid Vienna fans. Villa almost there.[LNB]74min: What a chance! Moments after coming on Gartler is left one on with Guzan but he is all over the place with his balance and Guzan does well to narrow all the angles and blocks the ventual shot from the substitute, massive let off for Villa there.[LNB]Nathan Delfouneso is on for the goal scorer Barry Bannan.[LNB]73min: Hamdi Sailhi has come off with Rene Gartler on for Rapid Vienna as Nigel Reo-Coker goes close with a shot inside the box but he couldn't get the ball out his feet and he fires his snap shot just wide.[LNB]70min: My word, I completely forgot he was on the pitch, Emile Heskey does well to control a long ball and after playing a one-two with Reo-Coker surges towards goal, he can only drag his low shot wide though, worth an effort but he has had a very quiet evening. [LNB]69min: Rapid are not as threatening as they have been but as we approach the last 20 minutes, will tiredness take an effect on this Villa team?[LNB]Big knock: Hamdi Sailhi can't stop himself from running in to Brad Guzan's knee[LNB]64min: Another Rapid corner, big test this for a young Villa team and if they can hold their nerve.[LNB]They do but Vienna are in total control here.[LNB]61min: Smart Save from Guzan as Veli Kavlak unleashes an outside curler from the edge of the box which Guzan can only push wide for a corner, suddenly Rapid are going all guns blazing here. [LNB]Their problem is they so far couldn't hit a barn door tonight, even their goal was pretty much a fluke cross.[LNB]60min: They even look a bit better from set-pieces now, Rapid win a free-kick and a corner in quick succession but Villa finally challenging for the ball and clear both efforts.[LNB]55min: They seem to have relaxed a bit now Villa and are not looking as shaky as they did at the closing end of the first half, still can't create anything mind but Rapid are also finding chances hard to come by.[LNB]52min: That is nasty, unavoidable, but shades of Battiston & Schumacher from the 1982 World Cup.[LNB]A bouncing ball finds its way in to the Villa box and as Guzan jumps to collect it, Sailhi can't stop and runs straight in to the goalkeepers knee, he's back up...eventually, can't fault the strikers commitment though.[LNB]50min: That's either silly refereeing or absolute desperate from Villa, as Brad Guzan is booked for time wasting....with 40 minutes still to go. I'm lost with that one.[LNB] All right: Marc Albrighton continued his impressive form setting up Villa's first goal.[LNB]48min: This Villa defence has not played together before and it very much looks like it, they are all over the place at the moment and nobody seems to be taking the responsibility to get them all organised.[LNB]Second-half: Vienna get us back under way, crucial 15 minutes for Villa they need to make sure Vienna don't regain the momentum they ended the first half with.[LNB]HT: TNS team news is in, as Villa take back to the field.[LNB]CSKA Sofia v The New Saints FCCSKA Sofia: Karadzhov, Vidanov, Marquinhos, Aquaro, Trifonov, Galchev, Yanchev, Tonev, Iliev, Saidhodzha, Delev. Subs: Chavdarov, Kostadinov, Vasilev, Tiboni, Yanev, Sheridan, Nelson. The New Saints FC: Harrison, Danny Holmes, Baker, Evans,Tommy Holmes, Ruscoe, Hogan, Seargeant, Matty Williams, Craig Jones, Sharp. Subs: Simon Williams, Craig Williams, Rawlinson, McKenna, Wood, Darlington, Berkeley.Referee: Hannes Kaasik (Estonia)[LNB]GOAL! Odense 1-0 Motherwell[LNB]Sorry Motherwell fans, probably seconds after I said all was well, Chris Sorensen has fired one in to the bottom corner from outside the area in the 31st minute.[LNB]HT: Atdhe Nuhiu hair seems to have been given the credit for Rapid's goal, not entirely convinced myself, probably about as much as most of you Villa fans probably care.[LNB]HT: Over half an hour gone in Motherwell's game against Odense and still no goals in that one.[LNB]Half-time: Rapid Vienna 0-0 Aston Villa[LNB]No injury time played, and after starting very brightly Villa badly faded in that half. Nevertheless they have a precious away goal, is it worth gambling for another though?[LNB] Captian Reo-Coker: Skipper for the evening Nigel Reo-Coker battles with Rapid Vienna's Thomas Hinum[LNB]44min: They are rocking Villa, another ball in the box and this time it's Namdi Salihi that rises highest before heading over. Half-time can't come soon enough.[LNB]42min: It's another free-kick to Rapid as well as Curtis Davies gives a needless free-kick 20 yards out.[LNB]Hofmann's free-kick is on target but Guzan does well to dive to his left to catch the ball.[LNB]40min: The most disappointing aspect of Villa's play so far has been set pieces. Villa have a free-kick 35 yards out but not for the first time the ball evades everyone before going out. Sticking with set play's they have not been great defensively either, looking very suspect when it comes to simple marking.[LNB]35min: Rapid have a new lease of life after that and they are starting to show a little bit more adventure, if not yet turning their spell of pressure in to chances.[LNB]32min: GOAL! Rapid Vienna 1-1 Aston Villa[LNB]Out of nothing and those are sickening to concede. Steffen Hofmann's in swinging cross from the right evades everyone and nestles in Guzan's bottom right corner. Sailhi will try to claim it came off a strand at hair but either way  Villa have been pegged back.[LNB]28min: From one of those counters comes a Vienna free-kick, which Villa's defence is not making a good job of either.[LNB]A long ball comes in from 30 yards out but Guzan comes out and doesn't get within a mile of it as it's headed wide, a better touch from Vienna then and Guzan would have looked a tad silly.[LNB]26min: Villa seem to very susceptible to the counter. When they have the ball they are fine, but when they lose it Vienna attack and look dangerous doing so. [LNB]22min: Little warning then as Rapid starting to play their way in to this one. [LNB]Motherwell have kicked off at Odense.[LNB]19min: Not all Villa's way though as Rapid win a corner.[LNB]They are VERY lucky not to concede either, a low corner to the edge of the 18 yard box catches Villa asleep and Hofman unleashes a drive which is deflected for another corner.[LNB]From that is an even better chance as the ball in from Hofmann this time finds Nuhiu who with a free header, heads over. Should have scored, massive let off for Villa.[LNB]15min: Vienna are in trouble here, Villa really starting to dominate this, so far Kevin MacDonald's reserves are doing themselves justice.[LNB] Off with a Bann: Barry Bannan scores early on from Marc Albrighton's cross[LNB]11min: GOAL! Rapid Vienna 0-1 Aston Villa[LNB]The boy is a bit special. Marc Albrighton is flying right now and after leaving the Vienna full-back on his backside sends in a low cross for Barry Bannan to tap home, an away goal for Villa, fantastic start![LNB]9min: What a stop! Brad Guzan has really earnt his money there, Nuhiu looks to curl one in th etop corner from inside the box but Guzan dives superbly to tip it wide for a corner.[LNB]7min: Villa are bossing the possession in this one but are not really in any urge to attack , Vienna seem content to let them have it. Crowd very quiet, I was expecting more from the home fans.[LNB]4min: Good omens for this one, both sides looking to attack early on, come what may though Villa will certainly be looking to grab an away goal tonight, even if they risk conceding. 1-1 will be much more useful than a 0-0.[LNB]1min: Well it has started better than last time anyway as Villa were one down within a minute this time last year.[LNB]Kick-off: Villa get us underway.[LNB]19.43: Teams are on their way out in a lovely sunny evening in Vienna.[LNB]Good news for you Villa fans. There is no Nikica Jelavic who scored both Vienna's goals that knocked Villa out last season as he has been left out following his uncertain future at the club.[LNB]19.37: Kevin MacDonald has thrown has taken a massive gamble here, clubs strive all season to get in to Europe and once the first game comes around he decides to field what is pretty much a reserve team.[LNB]There is much riding on this at a personal level as well, if MacDonald wants the job full time he better hope his 'B Team' at the very least leave the club with a chance going back to Villa Park for the second leg.[LNB]19.35: Only three players survive from the side that defeated West Ham at the weekend, with Stephen Warnock, Stewart Downing and Marc Albrighton the only starters from that game.[LNB]Eric Lichaj and Jonathan Hogg are both handed debuts by caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald.[LNB]19.30: Team news for Motherwell: [LNB]Odense BK v MotherwellOdense BK: Carroll, Ruud, Haland, Andreasen, Christensen, Utaka, Absalonsen, Sorensen, Caca, Djemba-Djemba, Gislason. Subs: Alexander Lund Hansen, Henrik Hansen, Johansson, Johansen, Kadrii, Feldballe, Hoegh.Motherwell: Randolph, Saunders, Hammell, Reynolds, Craigan, Hateley, Humphrey, Jennings, Murphy, Sutton, Lasley. Subs: Hollis, McHugh, Fitzpatrick, Forbes, Hutchinson, Page, Blackman.Referee: Zsolt Szabo (Hungary)[LNB]19.25: Villa team news:[LNB]Rapid Vienna v Aston VillaRapid Vienna: Hedl, Sonnleitner, Heikkinen, Katzer, Soma, Kayhan, Hoffmann, Kavlak, Hinum, Salihi, Nuhiu. Subs: Payer, Patocka, Drazan, Gartler, Saurer, Dober, Pehlivan.Aston Villa: Guzan, Warnock, Lichaj, Davies, Beye, Reo-Coker, Albrighton, Bannan, Hogg, Downing, Heskey. Subs: Friedel, Delfouneso, Osbourne, Weimann, Clark, Lowry, Baker.Referee: Alain Hamer (Luxembourg)[LNB]19.17: Afternoon all, Brit watch is in for a busy evening as we have no less than seven teams in action for tonight's Europa League play-offs which kick-off first with the tasty looking tie of Rapid Vienna v Aston Villa.[LNB]After the draw, Villa will be looking to get their own back sooner than they might of expected following last year's defeat to the same opponents at the same stage of the competition, but unless you have been living under a rock they will have to do so without James Milner following his transfer to Manchester City.[LNB]Team news on the way...[LNB] Revenge: Kevin MacDonald will be looking to avoid defeat against Rapid Vienna for the second season running[LNB]  Manchester City's £26m new boy Milner ready 'to win the title'No Kop out to Italy for Mascherano with Inter set to move for MarchisioLIVERPOOL FC
