Jamie Redknapp: Roberto Benitez! Mancini must rid Serie A style

15 November 2010 00:03
WEEKEND WATCHRoberto Mancini (right) is struggling to lose his Serie A mentality. He is in danger of adopting a similar approach to Rafa Benitez in the Premier League - with negative tactics, strange substitutions and settling for too many draws. [LNB]Get on the front foot, City! Especially at home - and with all that talent - they must show more ambition.[LNB] Style guide: Roberto Mancini must adopt more positive tactics to get results for Manchester City[LNB]DEAR SIR [LNB]My old Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier (right) was always very good at the development stage of a footballer. [LNB]Like a teacher, his strength was education. He once said to Steven Gerrard: 'You don't put diesel in a Ferrari engine', demanding he started to look after himself better. [LNB]Now he is doing the same with the impressive batch at Aston Villa...[LNB]...BUT MIND THE GAP [LNB]...a word of caution for the young Villa players. That was a good showing against Manchester United, but the test will come away from home. [LNB]I would also ask if a more experienced team would have lost a two-goal lead? [LNB]Barry Bannan and Marc Albrighton (right) stand out as players who are very comfortable with the ball and run at players. Kevin MacDonald has prepared them well. [LNB]FED THE RED Federico Macheda made a mistake for Villa's second goal, but then made up for it with a cracker of a shot that offered his team a way back. [LNB]I like Macheda. He's got lots of promise, talent and hunger and it looks as if he might be coming back on to the scene after injuries disrupted his development. [LNB] Mac the knife: Federico Macheda hammers home an unstoppable strike at Aston Villa[LNB]He likes playing against Villa. That's the second time he's hurt them.[LNB]TELL US , FABIO What did Kevin Davies (right) do wrong? Why has he been dropped by England, for Carlton Cole and Jay Bothroyd? [LNB]He's scoring goals and is leading the line for a Bolton team punching above their weight. [LNB]Maybe Davies is not always easy on the eye, but he has done everything that has been asked of him. [LNB]Winning teams are not about the pretty boys all of the time.[LNB]WEL DONE, STEVE As a Geordie managing Sunderland, Steve Bruce must have felt like calling it a day after losing 5-1 in the Tyne-Wear derby. [LNB]Since then, however, Sunderland have turned the corner for their boss. [LNB]Their result of the season came at Chelsea yesterday. [LNB]On loan United striker Danny Welbeck played well and is looking like a player. But it's Bruce who must take a bow.[LNB]WHAT'S THE POINT? [LNB]Why are England playing this game against France? Fabio Capello's squad is limping into the game. [LNB]Wembley is surprisingly sold out on Wednesday but what will we learn from this fixture? [LNB]Looking at the seriously depleted squad and with clubs in the middle of Champions League fixtures, I just don't get it. Brazil v Argentina in the Middle East is another unnecessary game.
