HATCHET MAN: O'Neill for England? There's only one deal on the Villa manager's mind here

17 March 2009 09:17
Claims today that Martin O'Neill is the Football Association's first choice to replace Fabio Capello when he goes as England manager cannot only have aroused suspicion in Hatchet Man towers. Although Soho Square suits may be worried about the possibility of Sven Goran Eriksson-style problems surfacing with the Italian, his future at least until the end of the next World Cup finals looks secure. England are on a high and the FA are not renowned for fortune tellingpowers, so why has O'Neill name cropped up in this unsettling way now? Could it have anything to do with other stories suggesting the way he has guided Aston Villa up the table is set to earn him a pay rise? The prospect of the club losing their manager to England certainly wouldn't hinder negotiations, would they?
