HATCHET MAN: Note to Davies - Forget United backlash, you owe Villa fans something after your shamef

Curtis Davies has been warning his Aston Villa team-mates about facing a Manchester United backlash on Sunday. The Premier League leaders have suffered a couple of unexpected blows recently but the defender's focus on them makes him look like he is beaten before they even start. If any team should be wounded and looking to lash out, it is Villa. They had a grip on fourth place and a Champions League place but have let it slip. Manager Martin O'Neill gambled everything on their League position and achieving that seemed to be at least as important to the club as a title win for United. In fact, it could easily be argued that the need for success after so long at this level was even more significant, but that has not been obvious from watching the team's recent pathetic performances. Arsenal's resurgence and their form dive has left them stuck in second gear. But the embarrassment of their thrashing at Liverpool should have pricked their professional pride at the very least. If they have genuine ambition and quality they need to announce it again by inflicting another blow on United rather than feeling sorry for themselves.
