HATCHET MAN: Cash-conscious Lerner may be happy being sixth best but Villa fans expect a whole lot b

Aston Villa have finished in sixth place for the last two seasons and have hit their ceiling. Owner Randy Lerner doesn't want to risk sending the club into debt and has indicated he is pulling in the reins on spending. Nothing wrong with that at all, but it means the second rung of Premier League clubs is the best they are going to manage because Martin O'Neill's squad is just not deep enough to climb higher. That should be a signal to the Irishman to put more effort into Villa's cup campaigns - including the Europa League - because sixth place is unlikely to keep the fans who jeered Gabby Agbonlahor this season happy for long.
