Harry sees Barry as the man to make Spurs tick as Villa fight to keep their skipper

Harry Redknapp has pinpointed Gareth Barry as the man to lead Tottenham's assault on the Barclays Premier League next season. Long-time admirers Liverpool are reported to be weighing up another move for the Aston Villa midfielder but Redknapp is hoping to benefit from the uncertain financial situation at Anfield. Transfer funds should not be a problem for Spurs as Redknapp is willing to let the likes of David Bentley, Darren Bent, Alan Hutton, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Tom Huddlestone and Pascal Chimbonda leave White Hart Lane. However, Barry's wage demands could be a sticking point. According to The Independent, Villa are offering England international Barry, who has one year left on his contract, around £70,000-a-week to sign a new deal. Spurs' highest earners are on around £45,000-a-week. And at 28, Barry does not fit the profile of the kind of player Daniel Levy usually signs - the Spurs chairman usually targets younger, less-expensive players. But Redknapp is desperate to add some experience to his ranks and is also keeping tabs on Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz and Portsmouth's England full back Glenn Johnson.
