Gabriel Agbonlahor's future at Aston Villa is unclear after the striker was suspended by the club for the second time this season pending an internal investigation into off-field matters.
The move comes following allegations in a national newspaper concerning Agbonlahor's conduct immediately following Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Manchester United which confirmed Villa's relegation from the Barclays Premier League.
This latest incident comes just weeks after an investigation into Agbonlahor's behaviour during a break in Dubai, although no action was taken by the club over that matter.
The Birmingham-born 29-year-old, who has spent the entirety of his career at Villa Park, has now had more internal investigations this season than he has scored goals - having hit the back of the net only once in 15 league appearances.
His strike in the 2-0 home victory against Norwich in February helped Villa secure their third league win of the season, although they have failed to win again since and Agbonlahor's form has declined too.
Agbonlahor finds himself out of the immediate first-team picture having been placed on a fitness programme by caretaker manager Eric Black last week.
The matter also brings more fresh turmoil on Villa following their relegation and the shock resignation of directors David Bernstein and Mervyn King on Monday.
The pair had only taken up their boardroom positions in 2016 and both were key figures in the search for a new manager, following Remi Garde's departure last month.
Amid this ongoing sense of chaos, supporters will continue their protests against owner Randy Lerner during this Saturday's game against Southampton at Villa Park. The Aston Villa Protest Group are urging fans to carry on with the 'Banners out on 74' campaign in which messages such as 'Proud History - What Future?' have been held up for Lerner's attention.
