Friedel thriving on Villa competition

Friedel has been in superb form all season and produced another magnificent performance in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Tottenham.[LNB]However, the 38-year-old American is not taking his place in the side for granted as he knows there is a younger rival champing at the bit.[LNB]Friedel's compatriot Guzan has excelled when given the opportunity, saving four penalties in the Carling Cup victory over Sunderland in October.[LNB]He is expected to start Tuesday's quarter-final at Portsmouth and Friedel is glad to have some competition for the number one spot.[LNB]"I have always been lucky that I have had self-motivation," he said in The Sun.[LNB]"There were years when we didn't have strength in depth in the goalkeeping position at Blackburn, so you had to spur yourself on.[LNB]"But Brad Guzan has an incredible work ethic and I know he is very, very good.[LNB]"Maybe in the back of my mind that keeps me going. It is paramount in the Premier League you have at least two good goalkeepers."[LNB][LNB][LNB] Portsmouth v Aston Villa. Click here to bet.
