Fabio Capello's five key questions ahead of England's Euro 2012 clash with Wales

25 March 2011 02:34
1 Who will be Terry's partner at the back?It was Michael Dawson in Denmark last month, where he did little wrong, although both central defenders were exposed in the first half by the fact that no-one managed to get a grip on Christian Eriksen. [LNB]Dawson's courage and honesty might be well suited to a Home International scrap in Cardiff but Phil Jagielka's extra pace may be useful to combat the darting runs of Craig Bellamy. [LNB] Not so gruesome twosome: Phil Jagielka is the favourite to partner John Terry against Wales[LNB]Joleon Lescott has started the last two qualifiers in Terry's absence. However, Capello often likes to have a natural left-side, right-side combination and Terry prefers to play on the left. [LNB]It's hard to see the England manager handing a full debut to Gary Cahill in such a vital game. [LNB]VERDICT: JagielkaRight choice: James Milner[LNB]2 Who plays on the right?Aaron Lennon's chances of starting his first England game since the goalless draw against Algeria in the World Cup finals may have been boosted by Tottenham team-mate Gareth Bale's withdrawal from the Wales squad, but he has fallen out of favour with Capello, who may prefer the option of using his pace from the bench.[LNB]James Milner remains likely to switch flanks and step into the role vacated by Theo Walcott's injury. Milner's discipline and industry allows Glen Johnson to attack freely from right back.[LNB]The pair forged a good understanding in the World Cup finals. If Milner is switched, it leaves a gap on the left.[LNB]VERDICT: MILNER3 Who will start in central midfield?Capello is keen to start with Jack Wilshere for the first time in a competitive international but this brings complications.[LNB]Wilshere and Frank Lampard did not deal well with their defensive duties in Copenhagen, blowing holes in the theory that the Arsenal teenager could be converted into an English version of Claude Makelele. [LNB]Wilshere's dynamic talents will be wasted if he plays as an anchor. Capello has said as much but landed himself with his biggest call of the day. Give the pair another chance? Leave out  19-year-old Wilshere? Or drop 84-cap Lampard? [LNB]Wilshere is the form midfielder, so should play. To relieve pressure, Capello will want to support him with a defensive partner. Scott Parker, who looked good in Denmark, would add energy. Like Dawson at the back, his rugged style might also suit the derby tempo. But Capello's fondness for experience, gives Gareth Barry a chance.[LNB] Jack the lad: Wilshere could oust the more senior figure of Frank Lampard in midfield[LNB]VERDICT: Parker & Wilshere4 And how about the left?Ashley Young has a strong claim ahead of Stewart Downing and new boy Matt Jarvis. Young made a goalscoring appearance as a substitute in Denmark, although he was disappointing when he started in the draw against Montenegro in October, when he was booked for diving.[LNB]VERDICT: Young5 Who will be Rooney's sidekick up front?England were deep in a striker crisis when Andy Carroll made his debut against France in November. He played up front alone, with Steven Gerrard in behind and Walcott and Milner wide. If Carroll plays in Cardiff, it will be with Wayne Rooney in a partnership which could run for many years. [LNB] Big man up top: Andy Carroll is set to form a partnership with Wayne Rooney for many years[LNB]Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Darren Bent can all make cases for inclusion ahead of Carroll based on experience at the top level but Capello is excited by the Liverpool man. His aerial power ought to allow Rooney a freer role but this may mean neither of them will threaten in behind the defence. [LNB]Wales should not deliver anything Carroll has not seen before. They are unlikely to confront him with an Italian libero system or skin-tight South American-style man markers.[LNB]VERDICT: Carroll  Bale's injury is a hammer blow to Speed but lets Fabio draw up new plan of attackIt's your fault!
