Ex-Ireland boss Steve Staunton set to battle Craig Hignett for Darlington job

Former Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton is among the leading contenders to replace Colin Todd at basement club Darlington. Staunton, 40, also had a spell as coach alongside Gary McAllister at Leeds last year. As manager of Ireland, Staunton saw his side lose 5-2 at Cyprus and needed an injury-time goal to beat lowly San Marino 2-1 as his side failed to qualify for Euro 2008. He holds the record for the most Ireland caps - 102 - but his time in charge of the national team was an unhappy one. The ex-Liverpool and Aston Villa defender is currently a scout for Premier League Wolves.  Former Middlesbrough midfielder Craig Hignett is also in contention for the job at Darlington who are six points adrift at the bottom of League Two.
