Everton and Aston Villa are scrapping it out to sign Sylvain Distin. The Portsmouth skipper has handed in a transfer request as he bids to become the latest star to leave Fratton Park. Pompey have already lost Peter Crouch, Glen Johnson, Sean Davis and Sol Campbell this summer. Everton are in desperate need of an experienced centre-back with Joleon Lescott joining Manchester City for £23million. But Villa also remain interested as they attempt to fill the void left by Martin Laursen's retirement and Zat Knight's switch to Bolton. Portsmouth rate Distin at £6m but Everton are understood to be reluctant to go above £5m.
