England on Warnock's mind
Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock has revealed adding to his one England cap remains at the forefront of his mind.
The 27-year-old has been in fine form for Martin O'Neill's troops this season, although his solitary England appearance 16 months ago remains his only cap to date.
Chelsea ace Ashley Cole is Fabio Capello's first-choice left-back while Wayne Bridge deputised in his absence in England's 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Belarus last week.
Capello has reportedly been a regular to Villa Park this season and Warnock hopes his fine form for the high-flying Midlands outfit has caught the Italian's eye ahead of next summer's World Cup finals.
"Fabio Capello was at the game with Manchester City a couple of weeks back and I've heard that he is quite a regular visitor to Villa Park," explained Warnock.
"It was great to make my England debut. One of my ambitions is to play again for England - and I don't see why that can't happen.
"Coming to a club like this has offered me the chance to do it and it is still very much on my mind."
Warnock knows his immediate priority is retaining Villa's left-back slot ahead of Nicky Shorey and Wilfred Bouma, who is close to returning following a long-term injury.
The former Blackburn defender is not looking to share the position with anyone else and is desperate to maintain his form to ensure he remains in O'Neill's starting XI.
"I have to play as well as I can and keep them out of the team. It may sound harsh but I am here to look after myself," he continued.
"I know from my time at Liverpool what it is like when someone comes in and takes your position but that's the way it is.
"As much as I feel for the other lads, I intend to play as well as I can and keep my place."
