Downing in Midlands for Villa talks
The fee, understood to be in the region of £12million, was agreed on Wednesday, and England winger Downing is now heading for Villa's training ground to begin talks and undergo a medical.
A statement released Boro's official website - Villa's own site issued a similar confirmation - on Thursday morning read: "Boro have accepted an undisclosed bid from Aston Villa for England international Stewart Downing.
"The 24-year-old has travelled down to the Midlands to discuss terms on the move and take a medical."
Downing is currently recovering from foot surgery which is likely to sideline him until October at the earliest.
