Davies surgery concern for O'Neill

Davies suffered a third recurrence of the injury in three weeks during Thursday's Europa League qualifier with Rapid Vienna at Villa Park. The former West Brom player may still face Fulham in Sunday's home Barclays Premier League encounter but will see a specialist next week during the international break before any decision is made. O'Neill said: "I have spoken to Curtis, and so has the club doctor, and it is something we will look at when the international break takes place. "He is going to see a specialist on Tuesday or Wednesday, and that will be important. All decisions will be up to the player, but we will see. "He is feeling upbeat again. But it is occurring more regularly than before - and it is something we all have to look at, myself as a manager, the doctor but more particularly the player himself." O'Neill will never have any doubts about Davies' motivation. "Curtis has got a great, great heart," he said. "He wants to play, wants to go on playing and, from that aspect, he has nothing to prove to me. He has shown that dozens of times. "He said it was a wee bit less painful than the last time it occurred, and usually it is one of those he will push to the side and get on with things. "But at some stage you would have to suggest surgery might be the answer." Villa's new signing, defender Stephen Warnock, is in the squad to face the Cottagers after completing his switch from Blackburn. O'Neill believes his versatility could help Warnock add to his one England cap, against Trinidad & Tobago last summer. "He has loads of ability and enthusiasm and is very versatile - which is very important for us," said the Villa boss. "He can play in a number of positions and has done for Blackburn. I am just delighted to have him. "He played midfield against us last season and scored a goal. If players have to move around different positions, it is no bad thing. "The more you can adapt in different positions, that is looked on favourably by most managers - not only at club but international level as well." O'Neill is also hoping to sign Manchester City captain Richard Dunne after holding talks with the player on Friday. The two clubs have agreed a fee for the 29-year-old.
