Carew heading for the door at Villa as O'Neill watches French striker Gignac

Aston Villa are watching Toulouse striker Andre Gignac, fuelling speculation that John Carew's Villa Park career could be cut short. Gignac is is France's leading scorer this season with 21 goals in 35 games after stepping into the void left by Johann Elmander's departure to Bolton last season, although he failed to score in front of Villa's scouts in a drab encounter with Lille on Wednesday night. Carew has not enjoyed the happiest of times since he was punished for going to a lap-dancing bar ahead of a UEFA Cup tie with Ajax in October. Villa boss Martin O'Neill bought Emile Heskey to put pressure on Carew, and if the Irishman is keen to sign another target man it would seem as though the Norway international could be on his way.
