Boro v Villa preview

15 May 2009 10:52
Middlesbrough host Aston Villa knowing that anything other than a victory is likely to mean Championship football next season. And if results go against Boro then they could even be relegated by Saturday evening. Boro's loss to local rivals Newcastle on Monday means that they need at least four points from their last two games against Villa and West Ham on the final day of the season if they are to have any chance of moving out of the bottom four. They are three points off safety but their goal difference means they would need the extra point to overhaul the margin. Villa are still locked in a fight with Everton for fifth place, although both are already assured places in next season's Europa League. Boro, though, will also know they have a poor recent record against the Midlands outfit. Villa have won on their last three visits to the Riverside, scoring at least three goals on each occasion. However, Boro are buoyed by the fact they are statistically in better form than Villa having taken eight points from their last 10 games, compared to just seven for Martin O'Neill's side. Team newsBoro boss Gareth Southgate's main injury concern is over David Wheater, who missed the loss at Newcastle with a knee injury. The home-grown defender trained on Friday and looks set to be involved on Saturday, but French midfielder Didier Digard looks unlikely to make the match after suffering a setback in training this week. Another definite absentee is Afonso Alves, who broke his foot at Newcastle and Southgate will have to decide whether to hand his place to Jeremie Aliadiere, Marlon King or Adam Johnson. He will also have to decide whether to stick with Marvin Emnes and Mohammed Shawky, who both surprisingly started at Newcastle. Villa chief O'Neill is not expected to make too many changes from the side that lost at Fulham last week. Midfielder Gareth Barry is a doubt after suffering with illness for most of the week, but he will travel at least. Carlos Cuellar is also back in the squad after returning to training following a virus which ruled him out of their last two games. Former Boro full-back Luke Young is also set to feature against his ex-employers despite suffering a recurrence of a foot problem last week. Possible starting XIs Middlesbrough: Jones, Hoyte, Taylor, Huth, Wheater, Aliadiere, O'Neil, Bates, Downing, Tuncay, Emnes. Aston Villa: Friedel, Luke Young, Cuellar, Davies, Shorey, Milner, Petrov, Barry, Ashley Young, Heskey, Agbonlahor.
