Blanked out! Gosling's strike stuns Rafa's Reds - and ITV miss it

05 February 2009 00:59
ITV sparked a storm of protest last night after millions of viewers missed Dan Gosling's dramatic winner in the Merseyside FA Cup derby. [LNB]After nearly two hours of a pulsating fourth-round replay — and with barely two minutes to go until a natural break — ITV cut to adverts in some regions.[LNB]Instead of seeing the 19-year-old's curled shot going in off Martin Skrtel's leg to give Everton[LNB]a thrilling 1-0 victory over Liverpool[LNB], viewers were being shown commercials for Volkswagen cars and Tic-Tac sweets. [LNB]Anchorman Steve Rider apologised, saying: 'Well, it was a dream strike from Gosling and Liverpool's goose was cooked, and technically I'm afraid it came at a pretty bad time for us as well. If you missed the goal our apologies for the technical problems we had at that time.' [LNB] Enlarge [LNB]The dramatic moment ITV missed (above). [LNB]ITV had been heavily criticised after the third round, when their highlights show gave scant coverage to Southend's dramatic 1-1 draw at Chelsea[LNB]. [LNB]Steven Gerrard had earlier limped out of the game with what looked like a hamstring injury, exposing the folly of Liverpool's transfer policy. Two days after Rafael Benitez sold Robbie Keane back to Tottenham[LNB], the manager lost his top scorer in the 16th minute and was forced to replace him with Yossi Benayoun.[LNB] A picture tells a thousand words: Gerrard (right) limps off, to the chagrin of Rafael Benitez. The influential midfielder will have a scan on his hamstring injury later today[LNB] [LNB]With Liverpool lacking firepower and reduced to 10 men when Lucas was sent off in the 76nd minute for a second yellow card offence, the two teams were level after 90 minutes for the third time in a fortnight until Gosling, who was 19 last Monday, sent the Blue half of Merseyside into raptures. [LNB]He said: 'It's a great day for the club and all the fans. I was thinking, “just shoot and get it on target”.' [LNB]Aston Villa[LNB]striker John Carew scored on his first start for three months in a 3-1 win against Doncaster. They will travel to Everton in the fifth round. [LNB]Derby joined them after fighting back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Nottingham Forest, with former Forest striker Kris Commons scoring the winner as Nigel Clough put one over on his and his father's old team. [LNB]Blackburn[LNB]saw off Sunderland[LNB]2-1, with Benni McCarthy scoring the winner two minutes from the end of extra time.[LNB] Everton 1 Liverpool 0: Reds are goosed by the golden Gosling[LNB]He shoots, he scores - but you were looking at Tic Tacs and Volkswagens at the time - sorry[LNB]Aston Villa 3 Doncaster 1: Carew rips heart out of Rovers as Villa book Everton clash[LNB]Blackburn 2 Sunderland 1: Extra special for McCarthy as he powers Rovers into last 16[LNB]Nottm Forest 2 Derby 3: Clough so proud as his Rams cut down Forest in their own back yard[LNB]EVERTON FC NEWS FROM ACROSS THE WEB[LNB]LIVERPOOL FC NEWS FROM ACROSS THE WEB[LNB][LNB] [LNB]
