Bent recalled to depleted England squad as Capello ignores Owen again

Back in favour: Sunderland striker Darren Bent[LNB]Darren Bent made a shock return to the England squad last night after Michael Owen was left counting the cost of a snub from Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson. [LNB]An injury to Dimitar Berbatov meant Owen had a fighting chance of starting beside Wayne Rooney at Chelsea yesterday and so staking a claim for a place in Fabio Capello's team. [LNB]But Owen had to wait until the 83rd minute before he was released form the United bench, convincing England manager Capello that he has not yet done enough to warrant a place in his squad. [LNB]Instead, Capello has gone with Bent for England's friendly against Brazil in Doha on Saturday, rewarding the Sunderland striker for the eight goals he has scored for Steve Bruce's side this season. [LNB]Clearly the Italian was not put off by his penalty miss against former club Tottenham on Saturday.[LNB]Capello has chosen a sensible approach to the friendly and omitted any player currently nursing an injury - even though some were patched up to play for their clubs at the weekend.[LNB] Left at home: Manchester United's Michael Owen will not play against Brazil in Qatar after being omitted from yet another of Fabio Capello's England squads[LNB]It means Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand, Emile Heskey, Ashley Cole, David James, Aaron Lennon and Carlton Cole have all been given what amounts to a winter break to recover. [LNB]David Beckham will not go if LA Galaxy were successful in their MLS Conference semi-final clash against Chivas USA last night. [LNB]Owen should not be too disheartened - had he started for United and done well, Capello was considering taking him as a fifth striker to Doha.
