Barry must consider England - Taylor

Midfielder Barry has been an automatic choice under Fabio Capello and seems certain to be a key member of his plans at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa. But former England and Villa manager Taylor fears Barry might pay the price at international level if he moves to a club with a rotation policy in his desire to play Champions League football. Taylor said: "Gareth Barry is a regular player at Aston Villa which helps him with his England place. "You can go to someone like Liverpool, and the other clubs in the top four, and you might get in the Champions League but, if Gareth is not playing regularly, he could lose his England spot. "Fabio Capello has made it pretty clear you have got to play regularly for your clubs and he has carried that through. "There is a lot of thinking for Gareth to do. He pretty much knows if he stays at Villa he is not going to be rotated out of the team. "We are going into World Cup year. It is not as if it is three years away. He needs to be playing regularly for England and I think he will do. "But he certainly would do if he is playing at Villa." Taylor added: "They say you have to play in the Champions League, which is a big competition, but I think to play in a World Cup is bigger than that. "Gareth won't want to put that at risk because with his natural left foot, playing in central midfield, Capello sees his value." Taylor has a hunch that Arsenal may join the race to sign Barry, along with Liverpool, who could not meet Villa's asking price of £18million last summer. But he would not be surprised to see Barry, who has been offered a lucrative new contract, remain at Villa. Taylor said: "I can't see Manchester United or Chelsea coming in for him. I think if it's Champions League football he wants, Liverpool have got to come in for him again and Arsenal may come in. They may be surprise movers for him. "If they don't come in, the only thing I can think of is if Manchester City and Tottenham came in and paid him more money than Villa are paying him. "He has had the offer of a new contract so it wouldn't surprise me to see Gareth at Villa again next season. I understand he has been offered a good contract by Villa and he will have some thinking to do. "I also think one of the things that was a bit upsetting last summer was when the £18million wanted for Gareth was assumed to be too much for Liverpool that they then went and spent £20million on Robbie Keane."
