Barry back for Belarus after Carrick fails his England audition in Ukraine

Gareth Barry has won 17 England caps under Fabio Capello - more than any other player - so he cannot have expected the axe to swing his way in Ukraine. [LNB]Barry has started 16 of Capello's 19 games in charge. He came on as a sub in a friendly against the USA, was suspended against Andorra and was dropped without explanation in Dnipropetrovsk, on Saturday. [LNB]Michael Carrick was preferred as Capello told anyone who would listen he had picked his strongest team. [LNB]'You're always on your toes. I didn't let my head drop and sulk. If I was a few years younger or a bit less experienced I might've done.' [LNB]Common concerns about Carrick's limitations surround his ability to change tempo and remain influential, criticisms that he did nothing to change in Ukraine. [LNB]His strengths lie with his vision and passing range. [LNB]He can slice open a defence at a stroke and can threaten the goal from distance but playing for 77 minutes in a team with 10 men made this difficult. [LNB]In short, his audition - Carrick's third start under this England boss and first in a competitive game - went badly. Barry watched from the bench but enhanced his reputation because his leading rival did not shine. [LNB] Under the spotlight: Barry, an ever-present under Capello, hopes to reclaim his England place after missing out in Ukraine[LNB]Carrick and Barry will both be under pressure if Owen Hargreaves recovers his fitness. [LNB]Hargreaves was England's star of the 2006 World Cup and his versatility - he can also play at right back-will count in his favour when Capello is choosing the 20 outfield players who will go to South Africa. [LNB]  'After four years of not being involved, I know you have to take your chance once it's there,' said Barry, who could return against Belarus at Wembley on Wednesday. [LNB]Barry offered support to his former Aston Villa team-mate Emile Heskey, who is worried about his own future in the England team. [LNB]Heskey cannot get in Martin O'Neill's team at the moment and admits he may have to follow Barry out of Villa Park to preserve his World Cup chances. [LNB]'I know where his fears are probably coming from at the moment,' said Barry.[LNB]  Owen is back for England but he's only invited to Fabio's Wembley partyHeskey in quit threat: Aston Villa striker desperate to protect World Cup spotRooney KO: England boss Capello loses his 'incredible' Man United starLampard urges England's fringe men to take advantage of Rooney's absence [LNB]  Explore more:People:MICHAEL CARRICK, Owen Hargreaves, Emile Heskey, Gareth BarryPlaces:Andorra, South Africa, United Kingdom
