Aston Villa's John Carew sets big targets for team-mates

John Carew said Aston Villa's 5-1 demolition of Bolton has set the standard  that they need to reach every week. Carew was a key man in the rout, scoring  once and helping to create two other goals.[LNB]Villa opened the scoring after a Carew effort had been saved - and then  followed up by goalscorer Ashley Young. Carew then out-muscled Gary Cahill and  laid on the second Villa goal for Gabriel Agbonlahor. [LNB]Good game: Bolton Wanderers' Johan Elmander congratulates Villa's John Carew[LNB] The giant Norway striker  scored himself to put Villa 3-1 ahead, which effectively killed Bolton off. It  was an impressive effort as he evaded Zat Knight, nutmegged Cahill and then  finished coolly.[LNB]'The standard that we produced is what we need in all games,' said Carew.  [LNB]'Bolton are a physical team but we still managed to get the ball down and play  it with our feet, playing one-twos, and play good football - even though it was  a game that could easily have been a ping-pong, aerial battle. [LNB]This match was a  real step forward for the team after the last three games, in which we didn't  win any.[LNB]'We played a very good game against Bolton. After losing against West Ham in  midweek, we knew we hadn't done well enough. [LNB]We were disappointed with  ourselves and for the people who travelled down to watch the game. But we  produced a convincing victory (on Saturday).' [LNB]He says that Villa are getting used to the tactical fluctuations between 4-4-2  and 4-3-3. Against Bolton, they used a three-pronged attack with Carew being  supported by Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor. Carew said: 'We play  differently, depending on the game but the players definitely know both systems  now. We can definitely cope with it.' [LNB]The pace of Agbonlahor and Young lends itself to counter-attacking football  across the floor, rather than in the air. But Carew does not mind using his  feet - even though he is stereotyped as  a target man, best suited to aerial  challenges.[LNB]He said: 'I really enjoyed the game. I like to use all parts of my body. We  played great football together. We need to bring this type of football into the  next games. This is [LNB]Aerial tussle: Carew and Bolton's Fabrice Muamba battle it out [LNB] how we should be playing at home - controlling games. We  should have the confidence to do it. We showed the way that we can play.  [LNB]'With my size, I normally have an edge on defenders anyway. If I go 100% then I  normally win the challenges. It's up to me not to let anybody else win the  challenges.' [LNB]The goals have not flowed for him this season yet - he only has three - but he  is unconcerned, explaining: 'There's no need to be ashamed. I feel that there  will be more goals coming from me. [LNB]Every season, it takes a while to get going.  The main thing is to keep performing and then the chances will come. I haven't  been worried about that.[LNB]'The injuries set me back but I have had a few games in a row since then and  have got into shape and the goals have started coming. Let's hope it continues.  I am happy with my overall goalscoring record at Villa and have to continue  working hard then the goals will continue.' [LNB]Carew singled out team-mate James Milner for praise after the Bolton game. He  said: 'He's our most consistent player at Villa for a while now. He almost  never has a bad game. He can play anywhere on the field. He can play with his  left foot and right foot so he is absolutely an important player for England.  [LNB]'Even if he is not first choice, he is a player that you can put on in any  position on the field almost for any situation in the game without lowering the  level of the team. He's good on the ball.'[LNB] ASTON VILLA
