Aston Villa's £10m bid for Charles N'Zogbia rejected by Wigan

Aston Villa have had a ?10million bid for Charles N'Zogbia rejected by Wigan.

N'Zogbia is Alex McLeish's top target to replace Stewart Downing, who has left to join Liverpool for ?20m, but the move has hit the buffers with the Latics playing hardball over a fee and the winger holding out for a higher offer than the ?50,000-a-week on the table from Villa.

But Alex McLeish is having better luck in his attempts to sign Shay Given, with the goalkeeper set to join fromManchester City.

Last summer McLeish tried to sign the Frenchman for Birmingham only for the move to break down over personal terms at the 11th hour.

But N'Zogbia has been told by Villa to either sign up or forget it as the club looks to push on and rebuild for the new season.

That process should be boosted on Monday by the ?3.5m signing of Shay Given from Manchester City.

It's a Given: Manchester City keeper Shay is about to end his spell on the bench with a move to Villa Park

The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, 35, has agreed a three-year deal to replace Brad Friedel, who has joined Tottenham, at Villa Park.

Given has been desperate to find regular first-team football after dropping down the pecking order at Eastlands behind England stopper Joe Hart.
