Aston Villa v Newcastle live!

24 May 2009 14:00
Villa's win confirms Newcastle are down. It is all over for the Magpies. Agony for them. Thank you so much for all your comments. FULL-TIME. Newcastle are relegated. 90+4 Edgar is sent off. A second yellow for another clumsy challenge. Further salt in a gaping Newcastle wound. 90+3 Newcastle put so many forward but still nothing. Owen's touch lets him down as the Magpies look doomed. 90 Four minutes of added time will be played. 89 Sidwell comes on for Carew. Just minutes remain. All eyes will be on how much injury-time is awarded. 86 Sugar. Jose Enrique curls a ball into the box and it almost creeps in. Villa are hesistant to getting anything on it and Freidel nervously sees it just wide. 85 Reo-Coker is on for Petrov. Elsewhere update: Sunderland 1 Chelsea 3. 82 Edgar is carded for a clumsy challenge. 80 So very close to curtains for Newcastle as Carew looks set to tap home from close range. But the striker mis-judges the cross and it catches his wrong foot. 78 It is really flat at Villa Park. Newcastle do not look like scoring. 76 Viduka is replaced by Ameobi. Last throw of the dice for Newcastle. 75 Heskey is on for Villa with Gardner making way. 73 Elsewhere update: Sunderland 1 Chelsea 2. 71 Huge sigh of relief for Butt as he hands the ball to Barry, who then curls a shot but it does not get enough bend. Massive let-off. 70 The Magpies knock the ball around but get nowhere. Ashley Young picks up a loose ball and bombs forward, almost creating for Villa. 67 Owen enters the fray, replacing Nolan. 65 Still Newcastle struggle to create and still Owen remains on the bench. Villa look like scoring on almost every attack. 62 Martins almost gets in behind Davies but the big defender recovers to clear. 60 Newcastle are forcing the forward ball. They need to work it a little before lofting a pass for Martins to chase. 58 Elsewhere update: West Ham 2 Boro 1. 57 Jose Enrique enters the fray in place of Lovenkrands. Duff will ply his trade further forward. 55 Martins loses the ball in the middle of the pitch and Milner is presented with a chance to run in at goal. He hits left-footed but drags the shot and sees his effort bobble wide. Shearer looks to be considering a change. 53 Ashley Young is a whisker away from a marvellous goal. He comes in from the left and curls towards the top corner but the shot falls wide of the angle. 52 Update from elsewhere: Sunderland 1 Chelsea 1. 51 Ashley Young's whipped corner threatens to drop into the net but Harper backtracks to fist away. 50 Further update: Boro level against West Ham. 49 Newcastle are looking a little bit toothless at the moment. It is all rather predictable as they lump it towards Viduka time and time again. 47 Update from elsewhere: Chelsea take the lead at Sunderland. 46 Villa get the second half under way. It has been an entertaining encounter thus far. Newcastle may rue their missed chances while the slice of bad luck was a sucker punch. But anything can happen in 45 minutes and they will look to a losing Hull side as inspiration. An update from Skybet: Villa 2/5, draw 14/5, Newc 13/2. Newcastle will feel hard done by going in at half time one nil down, for all their chances though, they just don't look like scoring, and that's reflected in their price at 13/2. I can't see many more goals in this encounter, Under 2.5 at 4/5 could be a shrewd punt." Half-time. Seconds prior to the half-time whistle, Martins leaps to head goalwards from a Nicky Butt free-kick. His header flashes towards the corner but drops wide. The Magpies trudge off. 45 Two minutes of added time will be played. 44 Newcastle enjoy a spell of possession but Aston Villa are standing firm. Half-time beckons and so does a defining team-talk from Shearer. 42 Almost 2-0 as Carew tries a backheel and the ball bounces just wide of the post. Newcastle's defence was all at sea there. They need to re-focus. Barry hits a wayward strike at goal. It is heading off target but flicks off Duff's hanging foot and leaves Harper with no chance as it nestles into the corner. So unlucky for the Magpies. 38 GOAL - VILLA SCORE!!! 37 Newcastle are rocking. Ashley Young drops a curling cross into the area and Butt heads for a corner. They need to gain some composure. 35 Milner steps up to take the resulting free-kick but the strike is low and easy for Harper to smother. More news from elsewhere: West Ham are in front against Boro. 34 Steven Taylor is booked for hauling down Agbonlahor. He got the wrong side of the jet-heeled striker. 32 Impressive surge from Newcastle as Nolan powers into the box trying to force the ball home. He has to settle for a corner. 29 A lull in the action here, with a midfield battle ensuing at present. Newcastle still must focus on winning. Anything could still happen elsewhere. 26 News from the KC Stadium: Manchester United have taken the lead against Hull. As it stands, the Magpies are staying up. Still plenty of time left though for many more twists and turns. 24 Viduka and Cuellar both receive treatment after clashing heads. They should be okay. Viduka has been superb at winning headers so far, with Martins looking to scamper in behind. 22 Another close shave for Newcastle as Agbonlahor curls in a lovely cross from the left. Harper rushes off his line and denies Barry, who was fractions away from toeing home. 20 Harper forced into a sound stop. Gardner thumps first-time from the edge of the area and the goalkeeper parries over the bar. A warning for the Magpies there. 17 Pea-roller from Nolan after Viduka makes something out of nothing. Whether the Australian is playing for a new deal or not, he looks a real match-winner. 16 Newcastle looking very bright and causing Villa all sorts of problems. But they must beware as the home side look very capable on the break. 14 Again so close for the Magpies. Viduka shows great strength and skill to loop a ball into Martins' path. The Nigerian smashes goalwards but his effort zips over the bar. 12 Off the line! Steven Taylor swivels in the penalty area to hit first-time at goal. Cuellar is there, though, hacking off the line. Viduka then wins a header but it is tame. So close for the Toon. 11 Duff goes mighty close. He fires a right-footed shot at goal and it gets a deflection on route to goal. Friedel reacts expertly to divert it for a corner, which comes to nothing. 9 Newcastle now looking a little calmer and are popping the ball around better. The players look fired up but Villa's defence looks sound. 7 Coloccini then takes a huge gamble by chancing on a turn in a dangerous area. He gets away with it though. Newcastle are yet to create, but it is early days. 5 Coloccini is having a tough opening to this match. He misjudges a long thump forward and then hauls down Milner. The defender needs to calm down and focus. Luckily for him, the free-kick comes to nothing. 3 Agbonlahor then has a chance to break the deadlock. Barry dinks in a cross and the Villa striker wins the header but the ball drops on top of the netting. 2 Villa thump a Nolan long throw-in clear and the crowd are on their feet as Agbonlahor tries to latch onto the ball. Coloccini does just enough though and wins a free-kick. 1 Referee Chris Foy blows his whistle as Newcastle get the game under way, kicking from right to left as I see it. Both sides march onto the field to a rapturous reception. It is make or break for Newcastle football club. A final message from Newcastle fan Lee before I begin the match commentary. Lee says: "I feel physically sick. Hoping for a win. Howay the lads." After seeing Shearer's team choice, Jon Garner simply says, 'Goodbye Premier League'. He too bemoans the defence. Get your optimistic hat on Jon, stranger things have happened. Just 10 minutes... Carl, a Manchester City fan from Chester, is wishing Newcastle the best of luck, while John Finucane in Sarasota, Florida, is backing Shearer's team selection, stating that the experience of key players could be decisive. John, though, is concerned about his team's defence, which I have to admit looks rather frail, especially with John Carew a major threat. We're just 25 minutes away from kick-off here. The players are warming up on a sun-soaked Villa Park, gathering their thoughts. As a neutral, even my palms are getting a little clammy.
