Aston Villa v Hull City preview

04 May 2009 11:41
Hull City can take a giant step towards securing their survival when they visit an Aston Villa side that has slipped to sixth. The match, which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1, brings together two teams that are desperately out of form. The Tigers have claimed just one Premier League win in 2009 and are precariously placed just three points above the relegation zone. However, all the other sides in the bottom eight were beaten over the weekend and Hull's chances of avoided the drop were particularly strengthened by the defeats suffered by Newcastle and Middlesbrough. A win over Villa could prove decisive but manager Phil Brown will be without the suspended Caleb Folan following his red card against Liverpool. Captain Ian Ashbee returns from a ban, while Folan's absence could see Daniel Cousin make his first start since suffering a back injury last month. Left-back Andy Dawson is also in contention but midfielder Jimmy Bullard (knee) and Anthony Gardner (back) are both ruled out for the season. Villa have been in the top five for much of the season and challenging for UEFA Champions League qualification, but they have now been overtaken by Everton following the Toffees' win against Sunderland. O'Neill optionsMartin O'Neill's men have failed to win any of their last nine fixtures, although they have stopped the rot somewhat with a run of three draws and are almost certain to secure a place in the Europa League. O'Neill has urged his players to improve their home form and the manager is likely to ask right-back Luke Young to have to play through the pain barrier against Hull. Young missed the 1-1 draw at Bolton with a foot injury which has dogged him for several weeks despite having painkilling injections but Villa are hopeful he will feature. Striker Gabriel Agbonlahor and midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker could also come into contention after recent hamstring and knee setbacks. Possible starting XIsAston Villa: Friedel, L Young, Cuellar, Davies, Shorey, Milner, Barry, Petrov, A Young, Carew, Agbonlahor. Hull City: Myhill, Ricketts, Zayatte, Turner, Dawson, Ashbee, Boateng, Kilbane, Geovanni, Fagan, Cousin.
