Aston Villa v Cardiff preview

Aston Villa may recall Nigel Reo-Coker to the squad for Wednesday's Carling Cup clash against Cardiff City. The Bluebirds travel to Birmingham to face a Villa side who are in good form, having strolled to a 2-0 win over lowly Portsmouth on Saturday. Martin O'Neill may opt to recall Reo-Coker after the pair had a training ground bust-up last week, but the Villa boss is unlikely to risk Emile Heskey who picked up an ankle knock at the weekend. Long-term absentees Stewart Downing and Wilfred Bouma are still unavailable for first-team action, and Ashley Young could miss out with a calf injury. Cardiff slumped to a 2-0 home defeat to Championship rivals QPR on Saturday and will be looking to bounce back against their Premier League opponents. However, Bluebirds manager Dave Jones will have to do without Stephen McPhail who serves a suspension for the second match of a three-game ban after being sent off against Reading last week. Jones may give the fringe players a chance to shine against Villa, although he will be without Ross McCormack, Kelvin Etuhu, Kevin McNaughton and Adam Matthews who are all out injured. Cardiff may be buoyed by Villa's record against lower league opposition in recent seasons. The Villans went down to Doncaster Rovers in 2005, lost to Leicester in 2007 and were narrowly beaten by QPR last term.
