Aston Villa linked with £12m move for West Ham defender Matthew Upson

Aston Villa have reportedly made a £12million bid for West Ham defender Matthew Upson. Upton Park Gianfranco Zola has insisted he does not have to sell players, but bids approaching £15m would be difficult to turn down for the ambitious centre-half. Villa boss Martin O'Neill was concerned by his side's 2-0 opening day defeat by Wigan and is in the market for defensive reinforcements after losing Martin Laursen and Zat Knight this summer. Manchester City would also be interested in 30-year-old Upson if they fail to land Joleon Lescott from Everton. Villa were interested in Upson earlier this summer and have now made their move, according to skysports.com.
