Aston Villa confirm Stephen Warnock talks

Villa manager Martin O'Neill is racing against time to strengthen his small squad before the transfer window closes next week. Villa lost the commanding presence of captain Martin Laursen when he was forced to retire due to a knee injury in the closing stages of last season, while they also sold Zat Knight to Bolton for £4 million earlier this summer. Warnock was an unused substitute in Blackburn's Carling Cup victory against Gillingham last night. He sat out the defeat by Sunderland at the weekend and remained at home as speculation mounted about his desire to leave Ewood Park. O'Neill has admitted that setting up deals has proven to be tough this summer, and will be praying the Warnock deal goes through without a hitch. O'Neill said: "I think the proof of how difficult it might be is in the fact that a the number of clubs have not done a great deal of business. "I am talking about Premier League clubs. That might tell you something and of course the market gets a bit disjointed as well and everything has a follow-on effect. "All of those things are taking place at this moment but I am hoping we will be able to add some players to our squad because it will be important to us in the coming months."
