Aston Villa announce Paul Lambert's departure to no-one's surprise

In a move that nobody saw coming, Aston Villa have announced the departure of manager Paul Lambert.

On the other hand it was a move that everybody saw coming, because Villa have been absolutely awful. Lambert leaves with the club in the bottom three.

Another sign of impending doom for the Scot should have been when he received the backing of club owner Randy Lerner at the end of January. That never bodes well.

A club statement read: “Aston Villa Football Club has parted company this evening with manager Paul Lambert.

“First-team coach Scott Marshall and goalkeeping coach Andy Marshall will continue to prepare the squad for Sunday’s FA Cup tie with Leicester City at Villa Park.

“The club would also like to place on record its thanks to Paul and take this opportunity to wish him every success in the future.

“The club will announce a new manager in due course.”

Lambert managed his 100th game at Villa when they faced Chelsea a week ago, scoring their first goal for 652 minutes. After the 2-0 defeat to Hull yesterday he said: “We’ve got thirteen cup finals and we have to win these cup finals that are coming our way.

“I still believe, 100%. I still believe that the football club will be fine.”

The 45-year-old replaced Alex McLeish in June 2012 but following a poor run of results, and not having set the world alight previously for any consistent period, he and the club have parted company.
