Agent - Fulham head Scharner race

Paul Scharner could be set to join Fulham with Aston Villa now out of the running for the versatile Wigan player, according to his agent. The Austria international is almost certain to leave the Latics this summer with a number of Premier League clubs linked with his services. While both the Cottagers and Villa made enquiries over Scharner, Sunderland emerged as another possible destination after Steve Bruce left Wigan to take charge of the Black Cats. Martin O'Neill's side now appear to have dropped out of the reckoning after Valentin Hobel admitted they were keen to play Scharner in defence, with the eccentric 29-year-old preferring a midfield role. Fulham can offer Scharner Europa League football next season with Hobel claiming discussions were at an advanced stage, although he hinted that Hamburg could also come into the running. Strong Hobel told LAOLA: "Aston Villa wanted him as a defender and that is why they are no longer an option. "Fulham are strong at the moment. However, there is still the possibility he could go to Germany with Hamburg. "He will look at his options very carefully. "If Fulham can offer concrete figures and everything else all fits into place, then it could happen quickly. "We have been in contact with Roy Hodgson over the last two-and-a-half years. It could all be concluded within a week."
