Toni targets Azzurri return
18 Jan 2010 - 13:49:51
Roma loan striker Luca Toni is hopeful of staking a claim for a place in Italy's squad for the World Cup finals by impressing for the Giallorossi in the coming months.
The 32-year-old scored twice in the 3-0 win over Genoa at the weekend, having left Bayern Munich after falling out of favour with coach Louis van Gaal.
Toni said after his weekend success: "I came here to play my hand. Marcello Lippi knows what I can do and we'll see what happens in June.
"There is a great deal of enthusiasm here and I wanted to do well. I came here because I wanted to put myself back in the game.
"I think Roma is the right place for that. This is just the beginning."
Toni was part of the Azzurri squad who emerged victorious at the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany and has scored 16 times in 47 appearances for the national team to date.
