Francesco Totti has signed a new contract with Roma for "one final season", the club have announced.

The forward and long-time club captain will turn 40 on September 27 but will play on for a 25th season with the Serie A side, with whom he has set club records of 758 appearances and 304 goals.

He told the club's website: "I really wanted this contract, it represents the realisation of my dream. I always wanted to end my career having only worn one shirt - the Roma one.

"After speaking with the president, I am even more convinced that, working together, we can achieve great things."

The new contract is for one year as a player followed by a six-year deal as the Giallorossi's technical director, Totti revealed.

Roma president James Pallotta said: "It's quite fitting that on the anniversary of the day AS Roma was founded (June 7, 1927), Francesco Totti has signed a new playing contract.

"No one has played more games or scored more goals for this football club than Francesco Totti and we're delighted that he will continue for one more season.

"He's earned this contract and now we want Francesco's final season on the pitch to be the start of a new era of success for AS Roma."

Totti, too, is aiming high.

"I hope to win my second Scudetto with Roma," he said. " We believe.

"Obviously at the start of the season people draw up their predictions and it all looks very simple. We're aiming as high as possible, though we know that Juventus are better than everyone else.

"That said, when I spoke to the president today he guaranteed that he will build a great Roma side and I said I believed I had a chance of winning a second Scudetto."
