Confident Roma Set For Derby Meeting With Lazio

Roma head into Sunday's city derby against Lazio with their confidence soaring after Wednesday's vital Champions League victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

The Giallorossi beat the German outfit 3-2 at the Stadio Olimpico to climb into second place in Group E.

Miralem Pjanic's 80th minute penalty gave the Romans their first victory in Europe this season.

"We were brilliant in the first half and could have gone in with the score at 3-0 or 4-0," Roma coach Rudi Garcia said on his club's official website.

"Then after five minutes of the second period, they scored twice and we were left ruing not having scored more earlier.

"We switched off but the team showed character to get back into the match and win it.

"We knew we had to win to stay in the hunt for the last 16 and we did."

Roma went into the midweek encounter after a 1-0 loss at Inter Milan, a result that ended a five-match winning run in Serie A.

It also left the club a point adrift of league leaders Fiorentina, and Inter, with both sides level on 24 points.

Lazio have lost their last two league games, including a 3-1 defeat to AC Milan last weekend.

That setback marked the first time that Lazio dropped points at home.

The Biancoceleste head into Sunday's match on the back of a 2-0 win at Rosenborg that kept the side unbeaten in the Europa League.

Inter, who have not lost since September 27, play at Torino on Sunday.

Fiorentina will try to end Sampdoria's unbeaten run at the Luigi Ferraris stadium when they square off on Sunday evening.

The Viola, 2-0 winners at Lech Poznan in Thursday's Europa League, have prevailed in their last two league games.

In those victories, Fiorentina have scored six goals and conceded just one.

Napoli won for the fourth time in as many Europa League games on Thursday when they thrashed FC Midtjylland, 5-0 to qualify for the Round of 32 with two games to spare.

The azzurri, who had won five games in a row in Italy before a goalless draw at Genoa last weekend, will host Udinese on Sunday.

At home in Serie A, Napoli have collected 13 of a possible 15 points.

Defending Italian champions Juventus, who have not won on the road in the league since a 2-0 victory at Genoa on September 20 and have clinched just one point from a possible nine, travel to Tuscany to face Empoli on Sunday.

Juve, 10th in the domestic standings, drew 1-1 at Borussia Monchengladbach on Tuesday to remain unbeaten in the Champions League.

AC Milan, riding a three-match winning streak and in sixth place in Serie A, play on Saturday against Atalanta at the San Siro.

Palermo, in 16th place after six defeats in their past eight games, host Chievo.

The Sicilian outfit lost 1-0 at home to Empoli in the last round.

Hellas Verona, at the bottom of the standings with Carpi after claiming just six points this season from draws, host Bologna on Saturday.

Fifth-place Sassuolo, unbeaten at home, host Carpi.

Carpi brought back former coach Fabrizio Castori this week after sacking Giuseppe Sannino.

The latter had steered the club to just one win after replacing Castori in September.

Frosinone, having clinched nine of their 10 points at home this season, host a Genoa side searching for their first win on the road.
