Why for Arsenal, the FA Cup could be more important than finishing in the top four
For a club the magnitude of Arsenal, seven years without a trophy seems like an eternity. That said, the club has come agonisingly close on several occasions to attain silverware, the last being, the 2011 Carling Cup. Throughout this period, the club has had to work around some hard financial times with limited resources, yet manager Arsene Wenger, has ensured Arsenal’s existence with Europe’s elite.
However, the lack of silverware is one big concern for Arsenal. Players who have left the club in recent years have cited this being the main reason for their departure. This season, Arsenal’s aspiration for winning the Premier League has disappeared and any hope of going the distance in the Champions League remain slim. However, the club is still very much alive in the FA Cup, a competition where Wenger’s success is only second to Ferguson’s.
Arsene Wenger’s claim of equating a top 4 finish to a trophy is astounding, considering his own achievements at the club. The FA cup presents an opportunity for the Arsenal players to have their first taste of silverware. The trophy could just be a stimulus which can entice, the necessary hunger, a feeling which currently is unknown to them. For the manager, players and fans, there would be no bigger success than the club ending its seven year trophy drought. However, securing both, would drive anyone associated with Arsenal ecstatic!
