Wenger won't rush Fabregas
24 Feb 2009 - 13:48:47
Arsene Wenger has reiterated his intent to be patient with Cesc Fabregas during his comeback from a knee ligament injury.
The 21-year-old Gunners captain has been sidelined since the 1-1 draw with Liverpool on December 21.
But despite reports claiming the influential midfielder is close to a first-team comeback, Wenger has ruled out the possibility of a swift return.
Fabregas will play no part in Tuesday's Champions League last 16 first leg meeting with AS Roma.
He will also not be risked for the return leg in Italy in two weeks.
"He is definitely not in the squad or for the second leg," said Wenger.
"But after the second leg he will not be far away if it all goes well. It will be two or three weeks I think until he is back in normal training.
"He can play now but a medial knee ligament takes six to eight weeks and if you go into any contact like we did against Sunderland (on Saturday) you need solid knees.
"He says that (he can play) and yes, I have to tell him it's not possible. But the doctor tells him that first."
