Wenger to look at Gunners squad
Published : 25 May 2009 09:15:00

Arsene Wenger will take time to analyse whether his current Arsenal squad is "strong enough" to challenge for the Barclays Premier League title next season. The Gunners swept aside Stoke 4-1 at Emirates Stadium on Sunday with three quick first-half goals to sign off in style from what has been a difficult campaign. Arsenal, secure in fourth, had little left to play for after going out of both the FA Cup and Champions League at the semi-final stage. "After a dodgy start, in the last 23 games we lost just once, so the team is moving forwards," said the Frenchman. "The question we have to analyse now is: are we strong enough like that to win the championship next year? If not, what do we need to add to the squad? That is the basic question we need to answer." He added: "There is some great quality here, that is for sure, the squad is very young, so it is about what is needed to be added next year to challenge for the championship. "It is important not to go into conclusions straight away. I have to analyse well and then make decisions after." Wenger believes it is crucial to keep the likes of leading scorer Robin van Persie, who took his goals tally to 20 with a double against Stoke. "We want to extend the contract of Robin. It is the priority to extend the contract of [Nicklas] Bendtner as well," said the Arsenal manager. "The basic problem is to get round the table. We did that already a few times, but we always got delayed afterwards. We want Robin to stay, he wants basically to stay, but he still has two years to go."
