Wenger satisfied by point
08 Nov 2007 - 07:35:01
Arsene Wenger admitted it was mission accomplished after Arsenal reached the knockout stages of the Champions League, but claimed their attacking performance in the goalless draw with Slavia Prague had been "average".
The Gunners reached the last 16 despite the stalemate in the Czech Republic in a match in which Wenger made eight changes to the side that started their last Premier League game.
Theo Walcott, Nicklas Bendtner and Eduardo Da Silva started the match in a new-look front three, while key midfielder Cesc Fabregas was rested back home in London.
"The result is quite positive because we qualified and did not concede," said Wenger.
"The defensive performance was good, but the offensive performance was average."
Wenger's side had beaten the same opposition by a 7-0 scoreline last month, but in Prague they were left to thank goalkeeper Manuel Almunia for securing a point as he made a string of crucial saves.
"The conditions were difficult and Slavia defended very well," continued the Frenchman.
"They felt humiliated after the 7-0 and were determined not to conceded.
"We are through and can play better than tonight, but the overall performance of the team has been outstanding."
