Wenger's birthday treat
23 Oct 2006 - 08:06:24
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was delighted to see his side bounce back from a Champions League defeat with a convincing 4-0 victory at Reading.
A Thierry Henry double and goals from Alex Hleb and Robin van Persie ensured the Gunners kept up the chase of Manchester United and Chelsea and more than made up for a 1-0 reverse to CSKA Moscow in midweek.
Wenger, who was celebrating his 57th birthday, commented: "We are on a very good run and we were disappointed on Tuesday night, so we wanted a quick response.
"It came quickly with an early goal - a fantastic goal - and after that our movement, technique and pace made a big difference.
"Reading never gave up and were dangerous from set-pieces and crosses, but overall we looked always like we could create something with our mobility.
"You always worry because I have seen Reading here against Man United and against Chelsea and I know from experience that to go away from home after a Champions League game is always tricky, so I was concerned.
"We were under pressure before the game because Man United won and Chelsea won. We knew it was a big day for us."
