Wenger relieved after victory
06 Dec 2009 - 10:37:24
Arsene Wenger admitted Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Stoke City was 'needed' following their recent run of negative results.
A first-half goal by Andrey Arshavin and one in the second half from substitute Aaron Ramsey were enough to secure the points and move the Gunners back into third place.
With three losses in a row, the Gunners needed to stop the rot and Wenger was pleased by the response of his players.
"The win was needed," said the Frenchman, whose side have lost to Sunderland, Chelsea and Manchester City in the Carling Cup in recent times.
"If we had not won today you could question that we have been touched mentally, but the fact that we won today was very important.
"We had a good first half. We should have been two or three up. You can tell that recent defeats played on our mind in the second half.
"We played more restricted but we didn't give any more chances away today and secured the second goal that got us the win.
"But you could see how we have a game based on initiative and if our confidence drops then we are in danger, so it's important not to lose confidence."
